A Northwest Missouri school bus driver strikes and kills a high school student in St. Joseph, Missouri.

On November 15, 2010 Mason Adams, a 16 year old high school student, was walking in a crosswalk on St. Joseph Avenue near the Grand Avenue intersection. At approximately 7:30am a school bus rounded the corner, failed to yield the right of way and struck him. Mason later died as a result of the crash.

Mason Adams was a junior at Lafayette High School, located about three tenths of a mile from where he was hit. Mason was an honor roll student, an only child, a baseball player and baseball card collector.

Adams was struck, according to St. Joseph Police, crossing St. Joseph Avenue from east to west. The school bus was westbound on Grand Avenue and turning southbound onto St. Joseph Avenue. Adam’s was transported from the scene of the crash to Heartland Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the school bus, 23 year old Tracey Jones, was charged with carless and imprudent driving. Jones plead guilty to the misdemeanor charge in the Buchanan County Circuit Court. As reported in the St. Joseph News-Press, Judge Keith Marquart sentenced Jones to two years of probation, 15 days of shock detention and 200 hours of community service.

Jones admitted failing to yield the right of way at the crosswalk when she rounded the corner where she struck Mason Adams, ultimately leading to his death.

Mason Adam’s mother has filed a wrongful death suit against the bus company, First Student Inc. First Student fired Jones (the driver) after the incident.
