On August 17, 2011 at approximately 11:30 pm, 50 year old Susan Dunakey from Chesterfield, Missouri was operating a 2000 Jeep Cherokee on I-64 near Timberlake Manor Parkway. Dunakey was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes The first victim, Darnell Warner 23 years of age, drove a 1993 Ford Escape and traveling in the eastbound lanes of I-64. A second victim, Zachary Reed, age 36, drove a 2002 Peterbilt Tractor Trailer, also in the eastbound lanes.
The crash occurred when Dunakey was driving west on Highway 40 at Timberlake Manor Parkway. She crashed head-on with Darnell Warner of Hazelwood. After being hit, Warner’s car rotated into the path of Zachary Reed’s tractor-trailer, both going east on the highway. The tractor-trailer hit the passenger side of Warner’s car, then the truck ran off the highway and collided with a sign.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol claimed that Darnell Warner suffered serious injuries, while Zachary Reed was uninjured. Susan Dunakey suffered from minor injuries. Both were taken and hospitalized at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur by the Monarch Ambulance. Susan Dunakey and the two victims were all wearing seat belts.
Both the Jeep Cherokee and the Ford Escape were totaled with extensive damage as the result of the crash. The tractor-trailer received moderate damages. All three vehicles were taken from the scene of the crash by D & L Rideout Towing.
Susan Dunakey was arrested at 1:30 am Thursday, patrol stated. She was cited for her DWI and a second-degree assault for driving while intoxicated in a wrong-way collision. Formal charges are pending and the investigation of this crash continues.
