Carthage Woman Dies from Head-on Collision

In Jasper County, one woman is killed and another sustains moderate injuries from a head-on collision that occurred when the driver overcorrected and lost control.

On December 27, 2011 at approximately 12:05 p.m., Chelsey Burgess, age 21 and of Carthage, Missouri was operating a 1993 Ford Taurus traveling in the westbound direction. Janiece Siebert, age 47 and of Carthage, Missouri and her newborn son, Malachi, were the at-fault participants of this crash. Janiece was operating a 1999 Lexus Lx470 and traveling in the eastbound direction.

At that said time and place, Janiece Siebert was traveling eastbound on Cedar Road, only four miles south of Carthage, as she then ran off the right edge of the road and overcorrected, lost control, crossed the center line and collided with Chelsey Burgess head-on.

Chelsey Burgess was transported by ambulance to McCune-Brooks Hospital, where she was then declared dead by Dr. Michael Eastman.

Required by State Law, Janiece, being the surviving driver would be tested for alcohol consumption. No further evidence is supplied but Patrol Spokesman Sgt. Mike Watson did quote that alcohol was not involved in this accident.

Janiece Siebert received moderate injuries and her newborn son, Malachi, received minor injuries as a result from this crash. Both were transported by ambulance to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.

Chelsey Burgess’ 1993 Ford Taurus and Janiece’s 1999 Lexus received total damages from the crash and both were towed by M & M Wrecker in Carthage.

This auto-crash was investigated by Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Brandon Helms and Eddie Walker of troop D.
