Improper Lane Change Causes Moderate to Serious Injuries and 1 Fatality

When one Missouri driver crossed the center line in Chariton County, he crashed into oncoming traffic; injuries and one death resulted.

On March 26, 2012 at approximately 7:45 A.M., 40-year-old Bobbie Vollrath from Salisbury, Missouri was traveling north on Missouri Highway 5 ten miles south of Salisbury in a 2008 Ford Focus. At said time and place, Austin Cole, age 18, from Glasgow, Missouri was traveling south in a 2000 Ford F150. Also at said time and place, Jessica Stoebe, age 25, from Glasgow, Missouri was northbound in a 2004 Ford Freestar Van.

The crash occurred when Vollrath crossed the center line and crashed into Cole. Subsequently, Cole lost control of his vehicle and crashed into Stoebe. Vollrath’s vehicle came to rest in the northbound lane. Cole’s vehicle came to rest in the southbound lane. Stoebe’s vehicle came to rest off the east side of the highway.

Stoebe was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Chariton County Coroner Larry Breshears. The next-of-kin was notified and she was transported from the scene of the crash to Boone County Medical Examiner’s Office in Columbia, Missouri. Cole suffered serious injuries and was transported from the scene of the crash to University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. At-fault driver, Vollrath, suffered moderate injuries and was transported from the scene of the crash to Moberly Regional Medical Center in Moberly, Missouri.

Vollrath’s vehicle received moderate damage and was towed from the scene of the crash by Skin’s Towing of Salisbury, Missouri to the Salisbury Police Department. Cole’s vehicle received total damage and was towed from the scene of the crash by Skin’s Towing. Stoebe’s vehicle received total damage and was towed from the scene of the crash by Skin’s Towing.

This crash was investigated by Trooper Justin Dunn and assisted by Sergeant Timmy Shoop, Chariton County Sheriff’s Office, Chariton County First Responders, Chariton County Ambulance, and Chariton County Rural Fire. This was Troop B’s 9th fatality for the year of 2012.
