In Jefferson County, three children and three adults were injured after the driver of one vehicle was inattentive and distracted.

On April 10, 2012 at approximately 10:42 p.m., Joseph Lucas, age 46 and of Pacific, Missouri was operating a 2006 Chevrolet Impala and was traveling in the southbound direction on route F. During the time of the crash, Joseph’s family was in the car with him, which includes Tina Lucas (41), Logan Lucas (11), Haley Lucas (10), and Mason Lucas (7). Timothy Hulsey, age 16 and a resident of Pacific, Missouri was operating a 2001 Dodge Dakota and traveling in the southbound direction. Anita Fessler, age 67 and a resident of Catawissa, Missouri was operating a 2001 Ford F-150 and was traveling in the northbound direction.

At that said time and place, Timothy Hulsey was traveling southbound on route F as Joseph Lucas’ vehicle was stopped in the roadway, waiting to make a left turn. Timothy was inattentive and distracted while driving, which caused the front of his vehicle to strike the rear of Joseph’s vehicle. Due to the impact of the collision, Joseph’s vehicle was pushed into the northbound lane of route F as oncoming northbound traffic was approaching. The front of Anita’s vehicle then collided head-on with Joseph’s vehicle and upon the second impact caused Anita’s vehicle to exit the left side of the roadway and to strike an embankment.

Joseph Lucas and his son, Logan, both suffered minor injuries and were transported by Metro West EMS to Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur. Tina Lucas and her daughter, Haley, both sustained minor injuries and her son, Mason, received serious injuries. Tina, Haley, and Mason were all transported to St. Louis Children’s Hospital by Meramec EMS. Anita Fessler received moderate injuries from the crash and was transported to Mercy Hospital in Washington, Missouri by Meramec EMS. As for Timothy Husley, the Missouri State Highway Patrol report that he was uninjured and did not seek medical attention.

Timothy’s 2001 Dodge and Anita’s 2001 Ford both received moderate damages due to the crash and were towed by Hyndrich Brothers. Joseph’s 2006 Chevrolet Impala received total damages and was towed by Hyndrich Brothers.

An ever increasing number of traffic accidents are contributed with distracted drivers. Any driver can look away, respond to email or text, or place a phone call while operating a vehicle, but by the time the driver looks up it is too late. Fortunately, state officers developed a way to trace cell phone records that reveal the at-fault drivers negligence.

This auto-crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of troop C.
