In Barry County, a Monett toddler is killed while walking along Highway 60 on Saturday evening.

On April 7, 2012 at approximately 8:08 p.m., Dixie Stewart, age 61 and a resident of Crane, Missouri was operating a 2004 Ford Taurus and traveling in the westbound direction on Highway 60. Sierra Graessle, age 1 and a resident of Monett, Missouri was walking along the westbound lane on Highway 60 as she slipped away from her nearby home.

At that said time and place, Sierra sneaked away from her Monett mobile home and approached the nearby highway and began to walk inside the westbound lanes. Dixie Stewart was traveling along Highway 60 in the westbound direction when she was unable to avoid Sierra and the right front corner of Dixie’s vehicle struck Sierra and killed her on impact.

Sierra Graessle was pronounced dead by Barry County coroner, Jim Fohn, and was taken to Fohn Funeral Home in Cassville, Missouri. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Dixie Stewart was reported to be uninjured and did not seek medical attention.

Dixie’s 2004 Ford Taurus received minor damages from the fatality crash and her vehicle was driven from the scene of the accident.

Residents of Sierra’s neighborhood express their concerns of the highway in proximity to their homes and its common problems as parents. The chance of a child sneaking away unknowingly is a common issue among parents in the neighborhood, as Sierra’s home was only 100 yards away from the highway.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol with the assistance of Monett Police Department, the Barry County Sheriff’s Office, and troop D. This is troop D’s 25th fatal crash for 2012 and 3rd fatality for April 2012.
