Serious Injuries Caused by Failure to Yield

In Pemiscot County, a total of five people are injured after the at-fault vehicle fails to notice and yield to oncoming traffic.

On September 7, 2012 at approximately 3:50 p.m., James Vires, age 47 and of Portageville, Missouri was operating a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado and traveling in the northbound direction. Glenn Smith, age 21 and of Portageville, Missouri was operating a 1995 Buick Park Avenue and traveling in the westbound direction. Along with Glenn Smith were his two children, Glenn Jr., age 1, and his daughter Kaylin, age 2, that were in the vehicle during the time of the crash.

At that said time and place, James Vires was traveling northbound while Glenn Smith was traveling westbound on County Road 318, a half mile south of Portageville, Missouri. The crash occurred as both vehicles were entering the intersection and Glenn Smith failed to notice or yield to any oncoming traffic and collided with James Vire’s vehicle.

James Vires sustained moderate injuries from the collision and was taken by ambulance to Pemiscot Memorial Hospital in Hayti, Missouri. Glenn Smith Jr. received serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Pemiscot Memorial Hospital in Hayti, Missouri. Kaylin Smith and Danielle Lawson both received serious injuries from the crash and were transported by Life Flight to Lebonheur Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Glenn Smith Sr. received moderate injuries from the crash but refused medical treatment.

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, all participants involved in this crash were not wearing seatbelts during the time of the collision.

James Vire’s 2002 Chevrolet Silverado received extensive damages from the crash and was towed by D & K Wrecker from Portageville, Missouri. Glenn Smith’s 1995 Buick Park Avenue received total damages from the crash and was towed by Johnson’s 66 from Portageville, Missouri.

This crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of troop E.
