Wrong-way Crash Results in One Fatality

In Sainte Genevieve County, the driver of one vehicle was traveling the wrong way in southbound lanes and is later killed after a head-on collision.

On September 19, 2012 at approximately 11:43 a.m., Kenneth Sullivan, age 47 and from Van Buren, Missouri was operating a 1996 Nissan XE. Kenneth Sullivan was traveling in the northbound direction on southbound Interstate 55 at mile marker 144. Thad Thurman, age 34 and from High Ridge, Missouri was operating a 2007 Toyota Tundra. Thad Thurman was traveling in the southbound direction on southbound Interstate 55 at mile marker 144.

At that said time and place, Thad Thurman was traveling in the southbound direction while Kenneth Sullivan was in the northbound direction on southbound Interstate 55. The crash occurred as Kenneth Sullivan was heading north in the southbound lanes of the highway when he collided head-on with Thad Thurman’s truck.

Kenneth Sullivan was pronounced dead at the crash scene by EMS personnel. Then, Kenneth was taken to Sainte Genevieve Memorial Hospital by the Sainte Genevieve coroner. Thad Thurman sustained serious injuries due to the head-on collision and was flown to Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis by air evacuation helicopter. By Thursday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said that Thad was listed in good condition at Barnes Jewish Hospital.

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Thad Thurman was reported to be wearing his seat belt during the crash while Kenneth Sullivan was not.

Kenneth Sullivan’s 1996 Nissan XE and Thad Thurman’s 2007 Toyota Tundra both received total damages due to the head-on collision. Both vehicles were towed by Stuppy’s Wrecker.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of troop C and trooper J.R. Diffee.
