Sneezing Fit Causes Fatal Head-on Collision

In Clay County, violent sneezing contributes to a head-on collision that seriously injures a one-year-old newborn and kills the driver.

On November 14, 2012 at approximately 5:45 p.m., Kathryn Brady, age 44 from Smithville, Missouri was operating a 2004 Ford Freestar. Laura McClendon, age 30 from Kansas City, Missouri was operating a 2005 Hyundai. Jet Kirkland, age one from Kansas City, Missouri was Laura’s passenger during the time of the collision.

At that said time and place, Kathryn Brady just turned onto eastbound route DD from Litton Road as Laura McClendon was traveling in the westbound direction. The crash occurred as Kathryn began to sneeze violently and crossed the center line on route DD. Kathryn’s vehicle collided with Laura’s vehicle head-on.

Laura McClendon was pronounced dead by the Jackson County medical examiner at the scene of the crash. Jet Kirkland received serious injuries from the collision and was taken to the Children’s Mercy Hospital for medical treatment. Kathryn Brady received minor injuries and refused medical treatment. According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Kathryn Brady and Jet Kirkland were wearing their seat belts while Laura McClendon was not.

Laura McClendon’s 2005 Hyundai received total damages and was towed by Ace Tow to a lot in Smithville. Kathryn Brady’s 2004 Ford Freestar received total damages and was towed by GT Tow to a lot in Smithville.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of troop A. This is troop A’s 56th fatal crash and 60th fatality for the year of 2012.
