Northwoods – A driver suffering from a sudden medical emergency struck a mother and her baby girl Monday morning while they were waiting at a bus stop.

Alyja H. Hughes, 8 months old, was taken to Children’s Hospital by Northeast Fire and rescue where she was pronounced dead. Mother, Erica Hughes, 39, from St. Louis was in serious condition and taken to Barnes Jewish Hospital by ambulance. The driver, Larry T. Jones, 41, also of St. Louis was reported to be in serious condition and was taken by ambulance to Barnes Jewish Hospital.

Jones was driving a 2000 Buick Century east on Natural Bridge Road when he veered across the west bound lane and struck Hughes and her daughter, who was in a stroller, before hitting a business sign and a mailbox and then overturning. The vehicle landed on all four wheels where it finally came to rest.

Erica Betts, who arrived at the scene, identified herself as his niece before stating that Jones is diabetic and may have had a seizure while driving to dialysis treatment in St. Louis.

Erica Hughes was thrown into the parking lot of the Love Discount Store, while her daughter was thrown from the stroller into a patch of grass on the east side of the parking lot.

David Smith, age 35, who was a former fire fighter and was training to become an emergency medical technician, heard about the crash from his mother before rushing to the scene. Smith performed CPR on the baby until paramedics arrived and took her to the hospital.
