Two Killed in Miller County Motorcycle Crash

In Miller County, two Memphis, Missouri residents were killed after the at-fault driver failed to yield to their motorcycle and crashed.

On June 30, 2013 at approximately 4:20 p.m., Elva Farris, age 77 of Olean, Missouri was operating a 2005 Ford Explorer. Christopher VanHoozen, age 40 of Memphis, Missouri was operating a 2007 Honda VTX1800 motorcycle along with passenger Cynthia VanHoozen, age 38.

At that said time and date, Elva Farris was traveling in the northbound direction while Christopher VanHoozen was traveling in the eastbound direction on US Highway 54 at Route AA. The collision occurred as Elva was traveling northbound on Route AA when she crossed the eastbound lanes of Highway 54 and failed to yield to Christopher’s motorcycle. Elva’s vehicle collided with the motorcycle, which caused Christopher and Cynthia to be ejected from the motorcycle.

Christopher and Cynthia VanHoozen were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Miller County coroner, Rich Callahan, and then were transported to Rekus Funeral Home.

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, both Cynthia and Christopher VanHoozen were wearing safety equipment at the time of the crash. Also, Elva Farris was not injured and did not seek medical attention.

Christopher VanHoozen’s 2007 Honda VTX1800 motorcycle received total damages and was towed by Tow Pro. Elva Farris’ 2005 Ford Explorer received moderate damages and was driven from the scene of the crash.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop F, the Cole County Sheriff’s Office, and the Miller County Sheriff’s Office. This is Troop F’s 6th and 7th fatality for June and 15th fatality for 2013.

Cynthia VanHoozen was a special education teacher at Scotland County Elementary School.
