Seven Injured and One Dead in Head-on Collision Crash

In Franklin County, the at-fault driver is dead after she crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming vehicle, injuring all of the occupants inside.

On August 13, 2013 at approximately 4:55 p.m., Martha Hartwig, age 65 of Cuba, Missouri was operating a 1998 Chrystler Sebring. David Vasquez, age 60 of Gilmer, Texas was operating a 2011 Ford F350. Inside of David’s vehicle was; Luis Babillo-Rodriguez, age 27 of Longview, Texas, Abraham (25) and Juan (21) Hernandez from Longview, Texas, Jesus Correa, age 24 of Gilmer, Texas, Juan Castillo, age 23 of Gilmer, Texas, and Alan Gonzalez, age 22 of Longview, Texas.

At that said date and time, Martha Hartwig was traveling in the westbound direction as David Vasquez was traveling in the eastbound direction on US 50 and 1.4 miles west of Old State Road. The crash occurred as Martha crossed the center line and collided with David’s vehicle head-on. Both vehicles then caught on fire.

Martha Hartwig was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Union Ambulance personnel and then transported to St. Louis County Morgue by Russell Colonial Funeral Home. David and his passengers all received moderate injuries from the collision and were transported to Mercy Hospital in Washington by Gerald and Union Ambulance districts.

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Luis Babillo-Rodriguez and Jesus Correa were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the collision and it is unknown if Martha Hartwig was wearing her seat belt or not. The remaining occupants involved in this crash were wearing their seat belts.

David Vasquez’s 2011 Ford F350 and Martha Hartwig’s 1998 Chrysler Sebring both received total damages and were towed by Sturm’s Towing.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop C.
