Fatality Caused by Wrong-way Driver

In Franklin County, a young man is killed after the driver attempted to avoid a wrong-way collision with another vehicle and left the roadway, causing the vehicle to overturn and eject the young man.

On April 20, 2014 at approximately 5:40 a.m., Shah Virkram, age 33 of Bronx, New York was operating a 2011 Kenworth Tractor. Gurpreet Kailey, age 29 of Little Falls, New Jersey was the passenger inside Virkram Shah’s vehicle. The identification of the wrong-way driver is currently unknown and under investigation.

At that said date and time, Shah was traveling in the eastbound direction on I-44 at the 229.4 mile marker. The crash occurred as Shah noticed the wrong-way vehicle approaching and attempted to avoid a head-on collision with the other vehicle. Shah traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned. His passenger, Gurpreet, was ejected from the vehicle.

Gurpreet Kailey was pronounced dead by Franklin County medical examiner, Major Mike Copeland, and then transported to the St. Louis County Morgue by Russell Funeral Home Service. Virkram Shah received minor injuries and was transported by Missouri Baptist ambulance to Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan, Missouri.

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Gurpreet Kailey was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

Virkram Shah’s 2011 Kenworth Tractor received total damages and was towed by I-44 Towing.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Crash Patrol and with the assistance of Troop D. Investigation still pending.
