A Morgan County Accident Claims the Life of Carissa Ryden, 31, of Versailles.

Morgan County, MO- The tragic accident occurred at 10am on Saturday morning October 10th, on US Highway 50 at Potters Ford Road.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol report, the accident occured when a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban being driven by Jeffrey D. Ryden, 38, of Versailles, failed to stop at the intersection and struck a 2007 Peterbilt being driven by Mark Schmakel, 47, of Waconia, MN.

The initial impact caused Jeffrey Ryden’s wife Carissa D. Ryden, 31, also of Versailles, to be ejected from the front passenger seat of the Suburban and into the middle of the roadway. The Peterbilt went off the right side of the roadway and stopped in a line of trees. The Suburban however, was then struck by a 2007 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Devin A. Heier, 24, of Jefferson City, MO. The second impact caused Izzabella N. Ryden, 7, to be ejected from the rear seat of the Suburban. Izzabella landed in the roadway and was struck by a 1997 Dodge Caravan being driven by Angela Harvey, 44, who had swerved to miss the initial accident.

Jeffrey Ryden and his two sons, Alex Ryden, 5, and Austin Ryden, 3, were all three wearing their seatbelts and sustained minor injuries. They were taken to the University of MIssouri Hospital by the Mid-MO Ambulance Service. Izzabella and Carissa Ryden were not wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. Izzabella Ryden sustained serious injuries and was life flighted to the University of Missouri Hospital by the Staff For Life Helicopter Services. Carissa Ryden was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 11:15am.

Mark A. Schmakel also sustained serious injuries and was transported to Bothwell Hospital in Sedalia, MO., by the Pettis County Ambulance Service. Devin A. Heier’s injuries were moderate, while his passenger Ankeeta K. Heier, 25, also of Jefferson City, MO., sustained minor injuries. They were both taken by the Mid-MO Ambulance Service to the University of Missouri Hospital.

The 2003 Chevrolet Suburban, 2007 Peterbilt semi truck and the 2007 Chevrolet Impala were all totaled in the accident. Whan Towing of Versailles and Don’s Towing of Sedalia assisted in the cleanup of the crash site.

The accident was investigated by Trooper A.C. Piercy (1157) of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s highly decorated Troop F. This is Troop F’s third fatality in the month of October and number 59 for the year. Trooper Piercy was assisted by Cpl T.R. Propst (862), Sgt G.Q. Billings (361) with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, the Tipton Police Department, Pettis County Sheriff’s Department, Otterville Fire Department, Whan Towing, Don’s Towing, Mid-MO Ambulance Services and the Staff For Life Helicopter Service. Tropper Piercy assigned report number 150634686 to this accident.
