A multiple vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 65, north of Chillicothe, Missouri,  injured five people early Thursday evening. The accident occurred about 5:00 p.m. on October 29th, 2015 when a northbound vehicle was making a left turn and the third vehicle behind failed to slow down.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol report states that three vehicles were traveling north: a 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by Rex G. Chaney, 47, of Brimson; a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by Rocio L. Trujillo, age unknown, of Trenton; and a 2008 Dodge pickup truck, driven by Robert A. Mayfield, 44, of Browning. Two vehicles were traveling south: a 2014 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by Colin M. Willits, 39, of Princeton; and a 2014 Jeep Rubicon, driven by Ruth A. Carter, 43, of Trenton.

The Missouri Highway Patrol reported that the Rex Chaney Chevrolet pickup truck came up on the Rocio Trujillo and Robert Mayfield vehicles, which were stopped or slowed to wait for another vehicle (not involved in the crash) to make a left turn. Rex Chaney reportedly failed to yield and struck the Rocio Trujillo’s Jeep Grand Cherokee in the rear. Rocio Trujillo’s Cherokee then rolled onto its side, went into the southbound lane and was struck by the Ruth A. Carter, in the Jeep Rubicon. Ruth Carter’s Rubicon then came to rest on its top off the west side of the highway. Then, Rocio Trujillo’s Cherokee was struck again by the southbound Chevrolet pickup truck of Colin Willits. This direct impact sent the Rocio Trujillo’s Cherokee, flying back onto its wheels and into the northbound lanes, where it came to rest.

Rex Chaney’s pickup truck ran off the east side of the roadway and then re-entered, striking Robert Mayfield’s Dodge pickup truck, which was northbound. Chaney’s vehicle came to rest in the southbound lane. Mayfield’s vehicle came to rest in the northbound lane. Rocio Trujillo was airlifted from the crash scene by Life Flight, and taken to Truman Medical Center in Kansas City for treatment of serious injuries. Two passengers in the Trujillo Cherokee were injured: Dariana Y. Sanchez, 10, of Trenton, received minor injuries and was taken by Chillicothe EMS to Hedrick Medical Center; and Manuel Sanchez, 20, of Trenton, received moderate injuries and also was taken by Chillicothe EMS to Hedrick Medical Center. Ruth Carter also received moderate injuries and was taken by Chillicothe EMS to Hedrick Medical Center.

No injuries were reported to passenger Jerod R. Carter, 8. The highway patrol reported that both occupants in the Carter vehicle were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. Mayfield was wearing a seatbelt, as were Willits and Dariana Sanchez. The report states that it was unknown whether Manuel Sanchez and Rocio Trujillo were wearing seat belts.

Rocio Trujillo’s Cherokee was totaled in the five vehicle accident. The Chaney, Willits and Carter vehicles received extensive damage. They were towed from the scene by Chillicothe Truck Repair while Mayfield’s Dodge truck was driven from the scene.

The crash was investigated by Troopers J.W. George, Q.R. McConkey, B.N. Raney, Sgt. E.F. Brown, of Troop B. The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, Chillicothe Police and Chillicothe EMS all assisted at the crash scene.
