According to the Columbia Police Department and the City of Columbia website,  at approximately 8:05 a.m. on Monday March 07, David C. Birkenbach, 66, was struck by a city bus while he was using a crosswalk, on Stadium Boulevard at Monk Drive.

The details of those reports state that Mr. Birkenbach of Columbia, was walking across Stadium Boulevard using the crosswalk, legally. A city bus driven by Hamis Mukiwa, 22, attempted to turn left from Champions Drive onto Stadium. According to Columbia Police Department spokesperson Bryana Larimer, ” the bus had a yellow left-turn signal, indicating it could complete the turn after yielding to traffic and pedestrians, and Birkenbach was legally within the crosswalk.” Larimer also said, “Mukiwa did not yield to Birkenbach while completing the turn, which led to the fatal crash.” Larimer also stated that alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the crash.

Mr. Birkenbach was rushed to the University Hospital by local EMS for his life-threatening injuries. He was later pronounced dead.

Hamis Mukiwa was not injured in the pedestrian accident, Larimer said, nor were eight passengers aboard the bus at the time of the crash. A different city bus took the eight passengers to Memorial Student Union.

City Manager Mike Matthes said the city of Columbia is cooperating with the investigation of the crash. Matthes also said in a prepared statement, “On behalf of the city of Columbia, we wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the family of the individual.”

The Matthes statement also says, Hamis Mukiwa is a temporary, part-time employee with the city of Columbia’s transit system. Mukiwa was placed on unpaid leave pending the outcome of the investigation of the incident. According to the police, Mukiwa was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

City buses are equipped with video cameras. The city bus that was involved in the accident, was City of Columbia transit bus number 374, a 1995 New Flyer D40LF transit bus. Video captured from the transit bus Mukiwa was driving, has been turned over to the Columbia Police Department to assist with their investigation, according to the press release.

The intersection is on the south side of the MU campus, near the Hearnes Center and the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute. The westbound lanes of Stadium Boulevard were closed down for about an hour due to crash, Larimer said. The Columbia Police Department managed the traffic during the accident scene and was assisted by the University of Missouri Police Department.

According to the release, the investigation is still ongoing.
