Chain-Reaction Accident on I-70 Injures Two

On Tuesday, April 23, a motorist and a pedestrian were injured when a disabled car on the side of the interstate led to a chain reaction crash.

A 2000 Pontiac Firebird that was left on the shoulder of I-70 was pushed into pedestrian Darius L. Walls, 23, of O’Fallon when a tractor trailer hit the disabled and abandoned vehicle around 9:25 p.m. Tuesday.

Patrick Sheppard was driving the 2012 International Prostar eastbound on I-70 west of Route K when he rear-ended the Pontiac. The third vehicle in the accident was a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by Joseph J. Yates, 25, of O’Fallon. Yates swerved to miss the Pontiac and struck the tractor trailer.

Mark L. Tringl, 49, of St. Louis, was driving a 1992 Oldsmobile 88 eastbound on I-70 after the first wreck took place. Tringl lost control of the vehicle after swerving to miss the vehicles involved in the first accident minutes before and struck the concrete barrier.

Darius L. Walls was taken by St. Charles ambulance to St. Joseph Health Center with minor injuries. Mark L. Tringl was taken to St. Joseph Health Center by St. Charles ambulance with moderate injuries and was reported to be wearing his seat belt.

The Pontiac, tractor trailer, and the oldsmobile were towed from the scene by A1 towing. Both the Pontiac and the Oldsmobile received extensive damages. The tractor trailer received moderate damages. Yates’ pickup received minor damages and was driven from the scene.

This accident was investigated by Trooper E. J. Graslie and Trooper J. M. Potocki of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
