Children Seriously Injured in ATV Crash


In Wayne County, two young children are hospitalized at St. Louis Children’s Hospital after they were ejected from an ATV operated by a teenage girl.

On August 14, 2013 at approximately 7:30 p.m., Makenna Black, age 13 of Mill Springs, Missouri was operating a 2007 Honda Rancher ATV along with passengers Braydin Barton, age 5 of Des Arc, Missouri and Alaina Smith, age 2 of Des Arc, Missouri.

At that said time and place, Makenna Black was traveling in the southbound direction on private property off of Highway 49 and south of Des Arc. The crash occurred as she lost control of the ATV and overturned, ejecting all occupants.

Braydin Barton received serious injuries and was transported by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. Alaina Smith received serious injuries from the crash and was transported by ambulance to Iron County Hospital. Later, Alaina was transported from Iron County Hospital to Children’s Hospital by helicopter.

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, none of the occupants on the ATV were wearing safety equipment at the time of the crash.

The 2007 Honda Rancher ATV was not damaged from the crash and was driven from the scene.

This ATV crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop E.
