Columbia Residents Involved in Fatal Crash


In Saline County, three young men of Columbia, Missouri were involved in a two-vehicle crash that injured two and pronounced one dead early Saturday morning.

On March 8, 2014 at approximately 8:25 a.m., Roderick Thomas, age 21 of Columbia, Missouri was operating a 2006 Infiniti along with Dominique Thomas, age 22 of Columbia, Missouri and Jordan Elam, age 23 of Columbia, Missouri. Joshua Outen, age 28 of Richmond, Indiana was operating a 2012 International.

At that said date and time, both vehicles were traveling in the westbound direction on I-70 at mile marker 65. The crash occurred as Roderick overtook and collided with Joshua Outen’s towed unit, causing Roderick’s vehicle to overturn multiple times. Jordan Elam and Dominique Thomas were ejected from Roderick’s vehicle.

Jordan Elam was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Saline County Coroner, W. Harlow, and then transported to the Saline County Coroner’s Office. Roderick Thomas received serious injuries and was transported by air evacuation to the Research Hospital. Dominique Thomas received moderate injuries and was transported by Sweet Springs ambulance to I-70 Medical Center.

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, none of the occupants in Roderick’s vehicle were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.

Roderick’s 2006 Infiniti received total damages and was towed by Don’s Tow. Joshua Outen’s 2012 International received extensive damages and was driven from the scene while his tow unit was towed by Jackson County Tow.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop A, Sweet Springs Police Department, and Saline County Deputies. This is Troop A’s 12th fatality crash and 15th fatality for the year of 2014.
