Construction Worker Killed on Highway 55

In Sainte Genevieve County, a construction worker was struck and killed on I-55 after he crossed the highway to pick up some road signs.

On July 2, 2012 at approximately 10:45 a.m., Donald Wallace, age 56 and of Mansfield, Missouri was operating a 1995 Ford L-9000 dump truck and backing up in the northbound direction at the time of the crash. Larry Dye, age 31 and of Hannibal, Missouri was working on a construction site near the roadway on I-55.

At that said time and place, the left lane of southbound I-55 was closed to traffic, due to construction, when the fatality occurred. The accident happened in the southbound lanes of I-55 as Larry Dye was crossing the highway to pick up some road signs. As Larry crossed the highway, the driver of the dump truck was in the process of dropping off some asphalt while backing up and didn’t see pedestrian, Larry Dye. Larry Dye was struck by the dump truck while the driver was backing up northbound in the closed lane.

Larry Dye was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Saint Genevieve County coroner, Leo Basler. Larry Dye was taken to Basler Funeral Home in Sainte Genevieve, Missouri by the coroner. Donald Wallace, driver of the dump truck, received minor injuries and was taken to Jefferson Regional Hospital by Sainte Genevieve County ambulance.

Donald Wallace’s 1995 Ford L-9000 dump truck received minor damages and was driven from the scene of the fatality crash.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of troop C and Major Crash Team #4.
