Couple Killed in Head-on Collision


In Pettis County, a couple is pronounced dead as a result of a head-on collision that occurred when the vehicle became disabled due to a prior crash.

On March 6, 2014 at approximately 10:20 p.m., Eldon Coleman, age 67 of Sedalia, Missouri was operating a 2005 Nissan along with wife, Melissa Coleman, age 67. Dale Carmichael, age 63 of Booneville, Missouri was operating a 2000 Freightliner.

At that said date and time, Eldon Coleman was traveling in the eastbound direction while Dale Carmichael was traveling in the southbound direction on Missouri 65 at Highway J. The crash occurred as Eldon’s vehicle became disabled in the southbound lanes of Highway 65 due to a prior crash. Dale then collided with Eldon’s vehicle head-on.

Eldon and Melissa Coleman were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Pettis County Coroner, Robert Smith, and then transported to Boone County Medical Examiner’s Office by ambulance.

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, neither Eldon nor Melissa Coleman was found to be wearing their seat belt at the time of the collision. Also indicated in the crash report, Dale did not seek medical attention.

Both Eldon’s 2005 Nissan and Dale’s 2000 Freightliner received total damages. The vehicles were towed by Don’s Towing.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop A. This is Troop A’s 11th fatality crash and fatalities 13 and 14 for the year of 2014.
