Driver Falls Asleep Resulting in Fatal Crash

In Wright County, the driver of a vehicle falls asleep and crashes, moderately injuring the passenger and killing himself.

On December 4, 2012 at approximately 1:50 a.m., Nova McClain, age 43 from Niangua, Missouri was operating a 1997 Ford Ranger pick-up. Katie McClain, age 62 from Niangua, Missouri was the only passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

At that said time, Nova was traveling in the southbound direction on Missouri Highway 5 and one mile north of Grovespring, Missouri. The crash occurred as Nova McClain fell asleep, drove across the center line and off the left side of the roadway, and collided with a tree.

Nova McClain was pronounced dead at the scene by Acting coroner sheriff, Glen Adler, and transported by Mercy ambulance to Holman-Howell Funeral Home in Hartville, Missouri. Katie McClain received moderate injuries from the crash and was transported by Mercy ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Katie McClain was the only one wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

Nova McClain’s 1997 Ford Ranger received total damages and was towed by Paul Prock Towing in Grovespring, Missouri.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of troop G. This is troop G’s 35th fatality for 2012.
