Driver in Mercer County Falls Asleep and Travels into Oncoming Traffic


On December 19th, 2014 at approximately 1:53 p.m., Marie E. Eslick, age 56, of Mercer Missouri, was operating a 2002 Ford Escape. She was traveling eastbound on US Highway 136, approximately 4 miles east of Mount Moriah. Traveling westbound on US 136 was 23 year old Damien M. Shaw, operating a 2005 Ford Freestar, and passenger Aeriel K. Conover, age 23, both from Kahoka, Missouri.

At that said date and time, Marie E. Eslick fell asleep at the wheel and crossed the center line, traveling into the westbound lane and into oncoming traffic. Damien M. Shaw, in an attempt to avoid a collision, swerved into the eastbound lane when Eslick corrected, striking Damien M. Shaw’s vehicle.

Damien M. Shaw received minor injuries while Aeriel K. Conover sustained serious injuries. Neither were wearing their seat belts. Marie E. Eslick was wearing her seat belt but still sustained serious injuries.

Both Conover and Eslick was transported by Mercer County Ambulance to Harrison County Community Hospital.

Both vehicles received total damages and were towed by Willis Garage.

The car crash was investigated by Trooper Q R McConkey 1311, of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Troop H. McConkey was assisted by Sgt. J J Rongey, 689, Cpl. A G McAtee, 776, Trooper J C Daly, 336, Trooper T B Heintz, 305 and the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department.
