Driver Killed and Five Others Seriously Injured

In Dunklin County, the at-fault driver is dead and five others are seriously injured after a head-on collision that occurred on Missouri Highway 25.

On August 18, 2013 at approximately 2:17 p.m., Stephanie Newsom, age 20 of Kennett, Missouri was operating a 1999 Ford Mustang along with passengers; Gracie (12) and Alandra (11) Gonzales, and Kaylee Carr. Amy Barnes, age 35 of Malden, Missouri was operating a 1995 Caravan along with passenger Richie Barnes, age 36.

At that said time and date, Stephanie Newsom was traveling in the southbound direction as Amy Richie was traveling in the northbound direction on MIssouri Highway 25 and 1.5 miles south of Holcomb. The crash occurred as Stephanie’s vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with Amy’s vehicle head-on.

Stephanie Newsom was pronounced dead at the scene by Dunklin coroner, James Powell, and then transported to Bradshaw Funeral Home in Malden. Amy and Richie Barnes received serious injuries and were life-flighted to Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis, Tennessee. Kaylee Carr, Gracie and Alandra Gonzales were seriously injured in the head-on collision. They were transported by air evacuation to Lebonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Amy and Richie Barnes were the only occupants found to have their seat belts on at the time of the collision.

Amy Richie’s 1995 Dodge Caravan received total damages and was towed by Southeast Towing. Stephanie Newsom’s 1999 Ford Mustang received total damages and was towed by McMahon’s Wrecker.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop E. This is Troop E’s 34th fatality for 2013.
