Driver Kills Newborn Child and Injures the Mother


In St. Louis County, a man falls asleep behind the wheel and crashes into two pedestrians, the mother and her 8-month-old baby.

On April 15, 2013 at approximately 11:05 a.m., Larry Jones, age 41 from St. Louis, Missouri was operating a 2000 Buick Century. 39-year-old mother, Erica Hughes, and 8-month-old daughter, Alyja Hughes, were walking on Natural Bridge Road.

At that same date and time, Larry Jones was traveling in the eastbound direction on Natural Bridge Road at Nelson Road while Erica Hughes was walking her daughter in a stroller. The fatality crash occurred as Larry Jones fell asleep behind the wheel, reported as a medical condition, and traveled off the north side of the roadway and collided with the two pedestrians. Larry collided with a business sign, a mailbox, and then overturned.

Alyja Hughes was transported to Children’s Hospital by Northwest Fire and Rescue and later pronounced dead. Erica Hughes was seriously injured in the collision and was taken to Barnes Jewish Hospital by Gateway Ambulance. Larry Jones was also seriously injured from the collision and was transported to Barnes Jewish Hospital by Northeast Fire and Rescue.

Larry Jones’ 2000 Buick Century received total damages and was towed by Tipton and Sons Towing.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop C.
