Fatal One Car Crash


In Audrain County, A SUV travels off the roadway causing it to overturn, and hit a tree causing serious injuries to the driver, and fatality of the passenger.

On June 13, 2014 at approximately 4:25 a.m., Jesse Smith, age 20 of Mexico, Missouri was operating a 2007 Chevrolet HHR with passenger Michael Cunningham, age 18 of Mexico, Missouri.

At that said date and time, Jesse Smith was traveling on County Road 355 when he traveled off the right side of the roadway. The SUV struck the ground, overturned, and slid into a tree.

Michael Cunningham was pronounced deceased at the scene by Audrain County Deputy Coroner T. Kendrick. He was taken to Arnold Funeral Home in Mexico. Jesse Smith received serious injuries and was air lifted to University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Jesse and Michael were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident.

Jesse’s 2007 Chevrolet HHR received total damages and was towed by Bens Auto Body in Mexico, Missouri.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop F, crash team two (2), and Audrain County Sheriff’s Department. This is Troop F’s 2nd fatality for the month of June, and number 26 for 2014.
