Five Killed in Lawrence County Crash


In Lawrence County, five people are pronounced dead as a result of a head-on collision.

On March 23, 2014 at approximately 3:45 a.m., Mason Colley, age 75 of Larussell, Missouri was operating a 2002 Ford F350. John Stephens, age 30 of Van Buren, Missouri was operating a 2002 Buick Century along with passengers; Lori Stephens (27), Harly Pappan (7), David Pappan (5), and Tyler Pappan (4).

At that said date and time, Mason was traveling in the eastbound direction while Stephen was traveling in the westbound direction on Missouri Route H and 3 miles southwest of Mount Vernon. The crash occurred as Stephen’s vehicle crossed the center line and collided with Mason’s vehicle head-on.

John and Lori Stephens and Harly, David, and Tyler Pappin were all pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Lawrence County Coroner, Scott Lakin, and then transported to Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City. Mason Colley received serious injuries and was LifeFlighted to Mercy Hospital in Springfield.

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the three young boys were wearing their seat belts at the time of the collision.

Both vehicles received total damages and were towed by Stop and Shop.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop D. This is Troop D’s 12th-16th fatalities for the year 2014. By law, the surviving driver was tested for alcohol.
