Hit-and-Run Results in Wrongful Death of Missouri Resident in Barton County


When one vehicle attempted to pass another, the crash resulted in a fatal accident near Lamar, Missouri on US 160 in Barton County. The at-fault driver fled the scene of the crash.

On September 28, 2011 at approximately 8:55pm, 52-year-old David Bailey from Galena, Missouri was heading westbound in a 2007 Chevrolet Pick-Up on US 160 eleven miles west of Lamar, Missouri in Barton County. At the same time and place, 39-year-old Christopher Wells from Carl Junction, Missouri was operating a 2004 Ford Pick-Up heading westbound on US 160. Neither of the drivers had passengers.

The crash occurred when Bailey was passing Wells and struck the side of Wells’ vehicle. Wells ran off the roadway and overturned. Bailey’s vehicle struck a ditch and then Bailey fled the scene. Christopher Wells was pronounced dead by Barton County Coroner, Tucker Joustra, at the scene of the crash. The next-of-kin was notified. He was then taken from the scene of the crash to the Daniel Funeral Home in Lamar, Missouri. Neither driver was wearing his seatbelt.

Both vehicles received total damage. Bailey’s Chevrolet was towed from the scene of the crash by Affordable Towing of Lamar, Missouri. Wells’ Ford was towed by Abernathy Towing of Lamar, Missouri. It is unknown if either driver had insurance.
