Intoxicated Driver Kills Passenger

In Johnson County, a drunk driver crashes and overturns off the roadway killing one of the passengers in his vehicle.

On December 12, 2012 at approximately 1:15 a.m., Bretton Ripley, age 30 from Pittsburg, Missouri was operating a 1990 Chevrolet. Stephanie Saxton, age 31, and Mary Ebb, age 24, were passengers in Bretton’s vehicle at the time of the crash. Stephanie and Mary are both residents of Holden, Missouri.

At that said time, Bretton Ripley was traveling in the eastbound direction on Highway 58 and 1501 road. The crash occurred as Bretton ran the vehicle off the right side of the roadway, struck and embankment, and overturned. Bretton Ripley was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

Mary Webb was pronounced dead at the scene by Johnson County coroner, C.L. Holderen, and then transported by Johnson County EMS to the Sweeney Phillips Funeral Home in Warrensburg. Stephanie Saxton was seriously injured and transported by Life Flight to the Research Medical Center. Bretton Ripley was transported by Life Flight to St. Luke’s Hospital on the Plaza with serious injuries. According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Bretton Ripley was the only passenger in the vehicle wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Bretton Ripley’s 1990 Chevrolet received total damages and was towed by Ron’s Towing.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop A and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
