Joshua McFerrin, age 36 of St. Clair, Missouri is taken into custody after he is accused of manslaughter for the deaths of Mitchell Mantels, age 56 of Villa Ridge, Missouri and Tarlton Stephens, age 46 of St. Clair, Missouri in a fatal crash that occurred on June 29, 2013.
Authorities said he was operating a 2000 Dodge Stratus on westbound Highway 100 at Route M when he failed to yield to oncoming traffic at a traffic signal and drove into the path of an eastbound vehicle. In the collision he injured three other people who were transported to Mercy Hospital for their injuries.
Joshua McFerrin received moderate injuries and was transported by Meramec EMS to Mercy Hospital in Washington, Missouri where he awaited for his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving. According to Missouri State Highway Patrolman Sergeant Al Nothum, he fled from the emergency room.
Police used infrared cameras to locate Joshua McFerrin in a wooded area near the hospital and Missouri River, Nothum said.
McFerrin was apprehended last week in Phelps County and will return to court in October for a preliminary hearing. He remains jailed without bond.
McFerrin made his initial court appearance and entered a not guilty plea in Franklin County for one count of involuntary manslaughter and possible additional charges.
The Washington Missourian reports that McFerrin previously served time in prison for assaulting law enforcement officers and resisting arrest by fleeing.
