In Lewis County, a Kirksville man was killed after being hit by a van as his stood next to his stationary vehicle.
On December 17, 2012 at approximately 9:45 p.m., Cortez Robinson, age 27 from Kirksville, Missouri was operating a 1996 Cadillac Deville. His only passenger was Stephanie Toolate, age 25 from Kirksville, Missouri. Jessica Murphy, age 19 from LaBelle, Missouri was operating a 1998 Plymouth Van.
At that said time, Cortez Robinson parked his vehicle partly in the roadway with hazard lights activated along westbound Missouri Highway 6. Cortez was standing alongside his vehicle in the roadway and Stephanie Toolate was standing at the front of his vehicle. Jessica Murphy was traveling in the westbound direction on Missouri Highway 6 when she collided with Cortez Robinson and the rear of his vehicle.
Cortez Robinson was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Lewis County coroner, Larry Arnold, and was then taken to the Lewis County coroner’s office in Canton, Missouri. Stephanie Toolate was seriously injured in the collision and was transported to Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois. According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Stephanie’s injuries were believed to be caused by Cortez’s vehicle hitting her after impact. Jessica Murphy received moderate injuries and was transported to Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.
This pedestrian-fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop B, the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, Lewis County ambulance, Knox County ambulance, and the Ewing Fire and Rescue Department.
