Columbia, MO – A semi truck struck a pedestrian walking along I-70.

On Monday, April 22, around 12:45 a.m. Robert Berst, age 55, was operating a 2013 International Prostar Tractor-Trailer Unit traveling westbound on I-70. Nicholas Braun, age 23, was walking in the westbound lane of traffic near the 127.8 mile marker.

According to Columbia Police, Berst attempted to avoid Braun, but was unable to swerve far enough. The 2013 Tractor-Trailer hit Braun near the passenger headlight. It is unknown why Braun was walking in the lane of traffic instead of the shoulder.

Braun was taken by ambulance to University Hospital with life threatening injuries, but was reported in less critical condition later that afternoon.

Berst voluntarily submitted to a blood test. Columbia police said they do not believe excessive speed, alcohol or inattention by Berst were factors in the accident.
