Marionville Woman Killed in Car-Train Crash

In Lawrence County, a woman from Marionville was killed when the car in which she was a passenger was hit by a train.

On December 17, 2012 at approximately 5:25 p.m., David Birch, age 38 from Marionville, Missouri was operating a 2006 Nissan Sentra. His only passenger was Katie Wiggins, age 26 from Marionville. Steven Hansen, age 57 from Springfield, Missouri was operating a 1998 Burlington Northern General Electric Train.

At that said time, David Birch and Steven Hansen were traveling in the westbound direction on O’Dell Street in Marionville. The crash occurred as David pulled his vehicle into the path of the train. The railroad crossing was activated with red flashing lights when the train collided with David’s vehicle broadside.

Katie Wiggins was pronounced dead by Lawrence County coroner, Scott Lakin, and transported to the Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City. David Birch was taken by helicopter to Mercy Hospital in Springfield with serious injuries.

David Birch’s 2006 Nissan Sentra received total damages and was towed by Hillbilly Towing. The 1998 Burlington Northern General Electric Train was undamaged by the collision.

This car-train crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop D, Crash Team 3, and the Marionville Police Department.
