Missouri 59 Highway Tractor Trailer Crash Ends in Fatalities and Serious Injury

Two Missouri residents killed and one moderately injured in t-bone crash on 59 Highway.

On August 23, 2011 at approximately 3:52 p.m., 37 year old James Body of Diamond, Missouri was operating a 1999 Kenworth Straight Truck traveling northbound on 59 Highway, about 5 miles north of Diamond. At that time and place, 81 year old Eugene Turner of Joplin, Missouri was operating a 2004 Buick Lesabre traveling westbound on 59 Highway. Turner’s vehicle was occupied by himself and wife, 82 year old Melva Turner.

At that time, Eugene Turner attempted to cross 59 Highway and drove into the path of Body’s truck and was struck broadside. Body’s truck then ran off the roadway and overturned.

Jasper County Coroner Rob Chappel responded to the crash and pronounced the at-fault driver, Turner, and his occupant dead at the scene. Eugene and Melva Turner were transported from the scene of the crash to Mason-Woodard Funeral Home in Joplin. The surviving driver, James Body, was transported from the scene of the crash to McCune Brooks Hospital in Carthage by private vehicle.

As required by law, the surviving driver was tested for alcohol. All individuals involved in this crash were wearing their safety devices.

This crash was investigated by Cpl Jeff Prewitt and was assisted by crash team members Sgt Brian Gruben and Cpl Scott Richardson of Troop D. This was troop D’s 60th and 61st fatality for the year 2011. Next of kin was notified.
