Barton County, Missouri crash at an un-controlled 4-way intersection ends in fatality.

On August 26, 2011 at approximately 1:55 p.m., 55 year old Shelia Francis of Joplin, Missouri was operating a 1997 Ford Explorer, traveling northbound on SW 90th Road, about 6 miles south of Mindenmines. At that said time and place, 49 year old Gregg Martin of Pittsburg, Kansas was operating a 2001 Dodge Pickup, traveling westbound toward the 90th Road intersection.

At that time, the two vehicles met at an un-controlled four way intersection. Francis’ vehicle struck Martin’s vehicle in the side. Martin then travelled off the roadway and overturned, coming to a rest on its top.

Gregg Martin was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Barton County Coroner Dr. Joustra. Martin was transported from the scene of the crash to Lomyer Funeral Home of Lamar. Injury information for the other driver, Shelia Francis, was not listed. Francis was wearing her safety device at the time of the crash; however, the deceased driver, Martin, was not.

Both vehicles sustained total damage in the crash and were towed from the scene by Dean’s Towing of Weir, Kansas.

As required by law, the surviving driver was tested for alcohol. This was Troop D’s 65th fatality for 2011. This crash was investigated by Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. M. Polodna and was assisted by Trooper B. O’Sullivan.
