On November 20, 2011 at approximately 9:40 a.m., 70 year old Harold Gleason of Niangua, Missouri was operating a 2002 Mercury traveling northbound on Highway 5, about five miles south of Lebanon. Gleason’s vehicle was occupied by himself and two passengers: 66 year old Paula Gleason and 7 year old Hannah Gleason, both also of Niangua, Missouri.
At that said time and place, 42 year old James Metro of Grovesprings, Missouri was operating a 1999 Hyundai traveling southbound on Highway 5. Metro then attempted to overtake another vehicle and struck the Gleason vehicle head-on. Both vehicles came to rest off the east side of the roadway.
Driver Harold Gleason and passenger/wife Paula Gleason were transported from the scene of the crash by St. John’s Ambulance to Cox South Hospital in Springfield with serious injuries. Gleason’s other passenger, 7 year old Hannah, was also transported from the scene of the crash by St. John’s Ambulance to Cox South Hospital in Springfield for treatment of moderate injuries. The at-fault driver, James Metro, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash and was transported to Holman-Howe Funeral Home in Lebanon by funeral home personnel.
All parties involved in this crash were wearing their safety devices except for the deceased, James Metro. Both vehicles sustained total damage in the crash and were towed form the scene by C&S Towing in Lebanon. The at-fault driver did possess insurance coverage for his vehicle at the time of the crash; however, it is unknown whether the Gleason’s vehicle was insured.
This crash was investigated by Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper Jason Riggs and was assisted by Cpl. Mike Mobley both of Troop I.
