The annual Missouri State Fair races on Sunday August 19th were called off after one of the “Battle of the Badges” cars abruptly turned left off of the front straightaway, crashing into the pit are where numerous people were standing. A minimum of five people were injured including one who was lifeflighted from the scene of the crash to an area hospital for treatment.
The crash occurred on the opening lap of the charity race put on by law enforcement officers driving old police cruisers which had been turned into race cars. Immediately prior to the accident, the yellow flag had been thrown due to a spin on the back straightaway. A few of the cars slowed to the yellow, others did not. The driver involved in the crash, 25 year old Tyson Russell of Crocker, Missouri, was either attempting to avoid slowing cars or was hit and turned about a quarter of the way down the straight. His vehicle went over a small barrier and crashed through a chain link fence.
According to reports bystander Mark Quisenberry, 57 year old of Columbia, Missouri and Lela Wood, 34 year old of California, Missouri were both transported to University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries sustained in the crash. Another victim, Jessalin Degonia, 27 year old of California, Missouri was transported from the scene of the incident by ambulance to Bothwell Regional Health Center then transferred to University Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
