Mount Vernon Man Injured in Dolly Crash

In Lawrence County, three participants involved in a two-vehicle collision are injured after the at-fault driver neglected to travel into the median.

On February 25, 2013 at approximately 3:49 p.m., Melvin Owens, age 74 from Mount Vernon, Missouri was operating a 2007 Freightliner Fire Truck. Sergey Bakunets, age 22 from Raverse City, Michigan was operating a 2006 Ford F150 pickup truck. Ivan Bakunets, age 22 from Traverse City, Michigan was Sergey’s only passenger inside the vehicle.

At that said date and time, Melvin was traveling in the northbound direction as Sergey was in the eastbound direction on I-44 and 7 miles east of Mount Vernon. The collision occurred as Melvin was stopped in an approved crossover with emergency lights activated and Sergey was towing a car dolly loaded with a van. Sergey then traveled into the median and collided with Melvin’s vehicle causing it to overturn.

Melvin Owens received minor injuries and was taken by a private vehicle to seek his own treatment for his injuries. Ivan Bakunets received moderate injuries and Sergey Bakunets received serious injuries from the crash. Both Ivan and Sergey were transported to Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri.

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, all participants involved in this crash were wearing their seat belts.

Sergey Bakunets’ 2006 Ford F150 pickup truck and Melvin Owens’ 2007 Freightliner Fire Truck both received total damages from the collision.

This auto-crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop D.
