Passenger Killed in One-vehicle Crash


In Barry County, the passenger of a vehicle is killed after the driver’s vehicle traveled off the roadway and overturned.

On March 21, 2013 at approximately 2:40 p.m., Jared Spears, age 26 from Monett, Missouri was operating a 2000 Ford SUV. James Bell, age 51 from Wheaton, Missouri was the only passenger in Jared’s vehicle at the time of the crash.

At that said date and time, Jared was traveling in the westbound direction on Missouri Highway 76 and two miles southeast of Wheaton. The crash occurred as Jared ran off the roadway and overturned. Both Jared and James were ejected from the vehicle.

James Bell was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Barry County coroner, Jim Fohn, and was taken to Fohn Funeral Home in Monett. Jared Spears received moderate injuries from the crash and was transported to Cox South Hospital in Springfield by ambulance.

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, neither Jared Spears nor James Bell was wearing their seat belt during the time of the crash.

Jared Spears’ 2000 Ford SUV received total damages and was towed by Thomas Towing of Monett.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop D. This is Troop D’s 23rd fatality of the year 2013.
