Passenger Killed in Rear-end Collision


In New Madrid County, the passenger of a vehicle is killed after a rear-end collision with a freightliner wrecker.

On August 10, 2013 at approximately 12:55 p.m., Vanessa Landers, age 54 of New Madrid, Missouri was operating a 2009 Nissan Versa along with passenger Richard Hare, 61 of New Madrid, Missouri. Gregory Copeland, age 33 of Sikeston, Missouri was operating a 2004 Freightliner wrecker.

At that said date and time, both vehicles were traveling in the southbound direction on I-55 and 2 miles south of Kewanee. The crash occurred as Vanessa collided with the rear end of the 2004 Freightliner wrecker, partially ejecting Richard from Vanessa’s vehicle.

Richard Hare was pronounced dead at the scene by New Madrid County coroner, George Delisle, and then transported to a funeral home in New Madrid. Vanessa Landers received serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston. Gregory Copeland did not seek medical attention.

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Richard Hare was the only occupant involved in this crash that was not wearing a seat belt.

Vanessa’s 2009 Nissan Versa received total damages and was towed by Courtois Wrecker. Gregory’s 2004 Freightliner wrecker received moderate damages and was driven from the scene of the crash.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop E. This is Troop E’s 32nd fatality for 2013.
