Pedestrian Fatality in Clay County

In Clay County, a man from Shawnee, Kansas is killed after a vehicle slid on the snow-covered roadway and collided with the pedestrian and another vehicle.

On December 31, 2012 at approximately 3:48 p.m., Max Francisco, age 19 from Kansas City, Missouri was operating a 2004 Jeep. Jessica Hamell, age 23 from Des Moines, Iowa was operating a 2010 Chevrolet.

At that said date and time, Max Francisco and Jessica Hamell were traveling in the southbound direction on I-35. The collision occurred as Jessica’s vehicle was stopped on the right shoulder of I-35 and Christopher Barnes was walking behind her vehicle.
Max Francisco’s vehicle began to slide forward on the snow-covered roadway and collided with Christopher Barnes and the rear of Jessica’s vehicle before sliding off the road and coming to a rest in a ditch.

Christopher Barnes was transported to Liberty Hospital by Kearney EMS and pronounced dead by ER doctor, Brad Hoffman. According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Max Francisco and Jessica Hamell were uninjured in the collision.

Max Francisco’s 2004 Jeep received moderate damages and secured roadside due to weather conditions. Jessica Hamell’s 2010 Chevrolet received moderate damages and was towed by L & L Towing.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop A and the Clay County Sheriff’s Department. This is Troop A’s 66th fatality crash and 71st fatality.
