Teen Fatality in Head-on Collision

In Greene County, a teenager is killed after he crosses the center line and collides with another vehicle head-on.

On February 4, 2012 at approximately 1:58 p.m., Carlos Lopez, age 16, and his 44 year-old passenger, Darla Goetz, were operating a 1999 Pontiac Sunfire and traveling in the southbound direction of MO 123. Jason Whisler, age 24, and his passenger, 22 year-old Sabrina Whisler, were operating a 1996 Dodge Pickup and traveling in the northbound direction of MO 123. All participants in this fatality crash are Walnut Grove residents.

At that said time and place, Carlos was traveling southbound on MO 123, a half mile north of Willard, Missouri as Jason was traveling in the northbound direction on that same road. Carlos then crossed over the center line and struck head-on with Jason Whisler’s vehicle in the collision.

Carlos Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Greene County medical examiner, David Brown. Carlos was then taken to the mortuary of Springfield, Missouri. Lopez’s passenger, Darla, received serious injuries from the collision and was transported to Mercy Hospital in Springfield. The other vehicle’s participants, Jason, received minor injuries and Sabrina, received moderate injuries as they were both transported to Cox South Hospital in Springfield.

Carlos’ 1999 Pontiac Sunfire received total damages from the crash and the vehicle was taken by EZ Towing of Willard. Jason’s Dodge Pick-up received extensive damages from the collision and was also taken by EZ Towing.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Corporal D. Walters of troop D. This is troop D’s 7th fatality for 2012.
