In St. Louis County, a back-to-back rear end collision occurred in a congested intersection due to one driver’s vehicle that experienced a mechanical failure.

On March 12, 2012 at approximately 7:25 a.m., Tynia Mitchell, age 23 and of St. Louis, was operating a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu and traveling in the eastbound direction. Terry James, age 61 and of Florissant, Missouri was operating a 2000 Freightliner and traveling in the eastbound direction. Mark Ralfs, age 58 and of St. Charles, Missouri was operating a 2010 Nissan Altima and traveling in the eastbound direction.

At that said time and place, all occupants were traveling in the eastbound direction at interstate 270, .25 miles west of interstate 170, when both Tynia and Mark slowed their vehicles for traffic congestion. As Terry approached the interstate his vehicle was unable to stop due to a mechanical failure and crashed into the rear of Mark’s vehicle. The force of impact caused Mark’s vehicle to then collide with the rear of Tynia’s vehicle and forcing her off the south side of the roadway. Terry’s vehicle travelled off the south side of the roadway and crashed into the guardrail and Tynia’s vehicle.

Terry James and Mark Ralfs did not seek medical treatment and were uninjured, according to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Tynia Mitchell, although, sustained moderate injuries due to the crash and was transported by Pattonville Fire Protection to DePaul Hospital.

Terry James’ 2000 Freightliner received minor damages as both Tynia’s 2004 Malibu and Mark’s 2010 Nissan received total damages from the crash. All vehicles were towed by Bolin Towing.

This auto-crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of troop C.
