Two Motorcyclists Injured After Rear End Collision


Cooper County – Two motorcyclists are injured after rear ending a vehicle that swerved into their lane Monday afternoon.

On Monday, May 20, 2013 Carol E. Lopatin, age 53 of West Bloomfield, Michigan was driving her 2010 Honda Civic eastbound on I-70. A group of motorcyclists were also riding eastbound on I-70. Those in the group included Don H. McAfee, age 60 of Apple Valley, California, Michael G. Garcia, age 31 of Lawndale, California, Cruz J. Garcia, age 61 of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Hector Castaneda, age 70 of El Paso, Texas.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. at the 89 mile marker when Carol E. Lopatin started to merge into the driving lane and into the path of an unknown vehicle. She then swerved back into the passing lane causing Don H. McAfee, Michael G. Garcia, Cruz J. Garcia, and Hector Castaneda to rear end the Honda Civic.

Don H. McAfee and Hector Castaneda were ejected from the motorcycles. McAfee sustained serious injuries and was flown to University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. Hector Castaneda received moderate injuries and was transported to University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri by Cooper County EMS.

Don H. McAfee’s 2008 Harley Davidson and Hector Castaneda’s 2008 Harley Davidson received total damages and were towed from the scene by I-70 towing. Carol E. Lopatin’s 2010 Honda Civic and Cruz J. Garcia’s 2008 Harley Davidson received extensive damages and were towed from the scene by I-70 towing. Michael G. Garcia’s 1987 Harley Davidson received minor damages and was driven from the scene.

This accident was investigated by Trooper Z.A. Czerniewski of the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop F and assisted by Trooper T.O. Mitchell, Trooper L. Dancy, Chief Visionary Officer J. Rector and Cooper County Sherriff Department.
