Police confirm it was two teenagers that were killed in the two-car crash Monday afternoon in Lee’s Summit.
The victims have been identified as 18-year-old Courtney Rardin, a recent graduate of Lee’s Summit West High School, and 18-year-old Nathan Giron, a senior at the same school. Both were passengers in a vehicle driven by Collin Carter, 18, also a Senior at Lee’s Summit West High School.
Police say Collin Carter is still in an area hospital in serious condition.
Investigators say Carter was driving north on Pryor Road in a black, 2005 Nissan Sentra. He attempted to pass another vehicle. As he was completing the pass, another vehicle appeared that was traveling south on Pryor Road. Carter attempted to get back to his side of the road and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle skidded sideways and was struck broadside by the southbound vehicle.
Nathan Giron was pronounced dead at the scene. Courtney Rardin was taken to an area hospital where he later died. The southbound vehicle was occupied by just the driver. They suffered minor injuries but were also taken to the hospital.
Police said they are months away from any decision on possible charges.

According to the police report, two people were killed Monday afternoon on February 1, 2016. The accident occured at 4 p.m. on Southwest Pryor Road, south of Longview Road. A driver of a northbound vehicle, accompanied by two passengers, lost control after passing a vehicle. It was then broadsided by a southbound, second vehicle in Lee’s Summit.
Emergency crews responded to the crash. According to the preliminary investigation, the driver of a vehicle headed north on Pryor Road, with the two passengers inside, tried to pass another vehicle. As the driver was completing the pass, a vehicle that was traveling south on Pryor appeared. The driver of the northbound vehicle tried to get back into the northbound lanes, but lost control and the vehicle skidded sideways. The southbound vehicle broadsided the out-of-control vehicle.
One of the passengers of the northbound vehicle died at the scene. Emergency crews rushed the driver and the other passenger to a hospital, where the 2nd passenger also died. The driver suffered serious injuries and remains in critical condition.
The driver of the southbound vehicle sustained minor injures and was taken to a hospital. Police are investigating the cause of the crash. The names of the victims were being withheld until family members can be notified.
