US Highway 54 Closed from School Bus Crash in Miller County

When a school bus driver failed to yield to traffic before crossing US Highway 54, he crashed into a teenage driver, which resulted in closing down the highway for two Staff for Life helicopters to land.

On February 28, 2012 at approximately 4:20 P.M., 53-year-old Mark Elliot from Eldon, Missouri was traveling westbound on US 54 at Mt. Carmel Road in a 2002 International School Bus. At said time and place, Richard Adam, age 18, from Kaiser, Missouri was traveling westbound in a 1993 Ford. Adam had one passenger – Brad Gilbert, age 23, from Kaiser, Missouri .

The crash occurred when Elliot was in the median crossover of US 54 and failed to yield to Adam. Elliot crashed into Adam, and neither Adam nor his passenger as wearing a seatbelt.

Adam suffered serious injuries and was flown from the scene of the crash by Staff for Life to University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. Gilbert, Adam’s passenger, suffered moderate injuries and was transported from the scene of the crash by ambulance to Lake Regional Hospital in Osage Beach, Missouri.

Elliott’s school bus received minor damage and was towed by Hi Tech Auto Body & Towing of Kaiser, Missouri. Adam’s Ford received total damage and was towed from the scene of the crash by Wood’s Wrecker Service of Eldon, Missouri .

According to KRCG staff, the School of Osage school bus did not have any students on board when it crashed, and highway patrol troopers had to shut down the highway to let two Staff for Life helicopters land for the victims.

This crash was investigated by Trooper C. R. Mistler and assisted by Lieutenant J. D. Wall and Corporal S. B. White.
