Wrong Way Driver on Highway 63 North Causes Numerous Car Crashes- Highway 63 is Closed for the Multi Car Crash

Columbia Missouri-

UPDATE 8/29/16

Columbia police have identified the wrong way driver involved with Sunday night’s multi-vehicle accident on Highway 63.

Columbia police told KRCG 13 that 5 vehicles were involved with the wrong way driving accident near the Discovery Parkway Exit.

Police said Roger Dickey, 50, of Jefferson City and his passenger Becky Dickey were traveling south in the northbound lanes of Highway 63 shortly after 7 p.m. on Sunday. Drivers in 3 cars managed to swerve out of Dickey’s way with minor damage. The fourth driver had a head on collision with Dickey’s car.

Columbia Police Spokeswoman Bryana Larimer said, “Roger Dickey, 50-years-old from Jefferson City, is in serious condition. His passenger that was in the vehicle, Becky Dickey, was also seriously injured but she is in stable condition.”

Police have not identified the name of the driver in serious condition who had a head on collision with Dickey’s car. They also have not identified the other 3 drivers who had minor injuries. Investigators said it is difficult to safely stop a driver traveling in the wrong the direction.

Larimer said, “Every situation could be different. The one thing that is certain is that our officers would never travel in the wrong direction to chase down a vehicle.”

Columbia police try to set up barriers or spike strips in front of wrong way vehicles or try to get the attention of wrong way drivers while driving along side in the right direction. Officers said they did not have enough time to prevent Sunday night’s head on collision.

Police initially said Monday they did not not suspect alcohol or drugs played a role in the wrong way accident. Later Monday they said they were still investigating whether drugs or alcohol were factors.

Police closed Highway 63 for about 3 hours after the accident.

Columbia Police released new information Monday regarding the wrong way driver accident on Highway 63 Sunday night.

The Columbia Police Department provided the name of the wrong way driver and his passenger. The driver is identified as 50-year-old Roger Dickey of Jefferson City and his passenger is identified as Becky Dickey. Authorities said alcohol or drugs are not suspected to have played a role.

The two were taken from the scene in serious condition. Four other drivers involved in the accident were also injured, three with minor injuries and one with serious injuries. The names of the other drivers have not been released.

Police said two of the involved vehicles swerved out of the way to avoid the wrong way driver. A fourth vehicle was clipped by the wrong way driver causing it to go off the road to the right.

A fifth involved vehicle was behind the clipped car. The unidentified fifth driver was then unable to avoid the wrong way driver, which resulted in head-on crash. That driver also suffered serious injuries.

Police say the man driving the wrong way on Highway 63 Sunday evening was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.

The Columbia police department identified the wrongway driver Roger Dickey, 50, of Jefferson City, Missouri.

They say Dickey was driving southbound in the northbound lanes just after 7:00pm Sunday. He apparently caused three vehicles to swerve off the road before eventually causing a head-on crash.

Police say Dickey and his passenger, Becky Dickey, suffered serious injuries. The driver of the vehicle hit head-on also suffered serious injuries in the crash.

University Hospital staff told ABC 17 News Monday Becky Dickey is now in fair condition and said Roger Dickey was not listed in its system as a patient.

Police have not identified the driver of the vehicle hit head-on. They say an investigation is on going.
