Wrongful Death in Head-on Collision Crash

In Moniteau County, a man from California, Missouri was wrongfully killed in a head-on collision.

On October 18, 2013 at approximately 6:40 a.m., Jacob Ponder, age 41 of California, Missouri was operating a 2000 Dodge Ram. Travis Butts, age 36 of California, Missouri was operating a 1995 Saturn SL1.

At that said date and time, Jacob Ponder was traveling in the northbound direction while Travis Butts was traveling in the southbound direction on Missouri Highway 87 and just north of Gamble Road. The crash occurred as Jacob crossed the center line as Travis swerved to avoid his vehicle. Jacob collided head-on with the driver side of Travis’ vehicle, which forced Travis off the roadway.

Travis Butts was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Moniteau County coroner, Lloyd Fulks, and then transported to Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Home. Jacob Ponder did not receive any medical attention.

According to the crash report, both Jacob and Travis were wearing their seat belts at the time of the collision.

Travis Butts’ 1995 Saturn SL1 received total damages and was towed by Leeper Garage in California, Missouri. Jacob Ponder’s 2000 Dodge Ram received extensive damages and was towed by Stockton Towing of California, Missouri.

This fatality crash was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and with the assistance of Troop F. This is Troop F’s 5th fatality for October and 33rd fatality for 2013.
